I wasn't aware of how much time had passed. All I knew was that, eventually, after sitting on the kitchen floor on my knees—the fizzing potions soaking into my clothes for a while—my heartbeat started to slow. A timid sense of calm washed over me.

However, it wasn't necessarily a comforting calmness. Rather, it was a bit disturbing. It didn't seem right to feel calm. Although, it was good to know that I was capable of controlling my emotions at least a little bit after such a dramatic temper tantrum. I didn't want to think about what Alyssa and Cody were thinking of me, what they were saying about me after witnessing the scene that they were forced to run away from. At least I got over it without too much damage caused. Unlike Alyssa, I hadn't set the house on fire or ruined the antique window panes, though I supposed I had made quite a mess of the street outside, what with all of those broken car windows.

But I was okay. I was getting over it little by little as the seconds passed. At least, that's what I told myself. As I stared down at the bloody mess on my arms and hands, I saw that the cuts caused by the glass explosions weren’t too deep, and the blood had stopped flowing. The violent streaks of scarlet that had dried on my skin made it look like I was far more injured than I actually was.

There was a type of dark magic commonly known as blood magic. It was used for terrifying, taboo things. It could be used to summon demons, to start a forest fire that could rage across half a nation before it was quelled, to manipulate someone's mind and force them to do your bidding, among other things. Blood magic was not something that they taught in schools. It wasn't supposed to be taught in any context, really. If a witch or a warlock was caught using blood magic, tapping into their own life force for a special kind of power that was different than that which we were born with, they could be outcast from society—or even charged with a crime, depending on what they used it for.

Most of the time, blood magic was used for curses, the kind of curses that could follow a family bloodline for generations. The kind of curses that could ruin lives or even end lives. Blood magic was seen as a more dependable source for curses because it was more binding. It was more than mere willpower and a muttered spell. It was bound by something physical, something raw, something that could give life but also something precious that, if taken, could destroy life.

If I was an evil person, perhaps I would have been considered putting a curse on Nick and Bethany. I had plenty of blood at my disposal, and I was more powerful than both of them. I could curse them to be in extreme pain every time they were within a mile of each other.
